Musings on University Life

  • Oct. 17th, 2011 at 11:49 PM

So I've been more than a little conspicuous in my absence over the last month and half (maybe more than that) and I promise that I am working on the sequel to Skies on Fire and War Machine. However, my life has been taken over by the institution known as University. At the end of September I left home, and moved into my student accomodation at the University of Southampton, which is only about half an hour from home, but it was still a massive upheaval and change. Before I had left I was so ready to go, ready for the challenge of studying English at undergraduate level, that it wasn't until the week before that it really hit me that I wasn't going to be at home anymore, which was scary to say the least. Packing up my belongings was harder than I really thought that it would be, because I have a really happy home life. I know a lot of people who I've met since I came here couldn't wait to get out of their parent's houses, but I was exactly the opposite. Not because I'm coddled at home, and so didn't want to have to do things for myself (I'm pretty self sufficent because of the hours I did at college, and work) but because I honestly love to spend time with my family. A good evening for me would be sat with my mum and brother watching NCIS or sat with Dad to watch Top Gear.

Moving was an... interesting  experience. I was the first person into my flat, and for a couple of hours it was just me there, which was a little surreal to be honest. My accomodation is organised into blocks of self sufficent flats, because I went for self catered, and I share a kitchen and two bathrooms with 5 other people, so I didn't have to worry about a roomate (that would have terrified me, having to share with someone who I really didn't know!) Still I was very nervous about the people I would be sharing with - would they be anything like me? Over the course of the day everyone else started to move in, and I found it hard to just put myself out there and introduce myself to them all. But I found some courage, and helped the others to move some of their stuff in, and started to feel a little more at ease. Saying goodbye to my parents and my brother was hard, watching them drive off made me feel very alone. Luckily one of my best friends, who I've known since I was 11, also is going to Southampton, and so I was able to spend some time with him, which helped so much with the homesickness. I don't know how I'd have managed my first week if he hadn't have been there.

Freshers week was certainly different. Now, I'm not that much of a drinker - I prefer a few casual drinks at the pub, rather than going out to a nightclub and getting wasted. I like the dancing part of it, but don't drink much at all when I'm out. (In case you were confused, the legal drinking age in the UK is 18, so Freshers week is a total legal booze up) The first night I surprised myself by playing drinking games with a large group of people, and had a lot of fun! But after that I felt a little out of my depth, because I didn't want to get drunk every night (I don't know how some people managed it!)

Living with my flatmates has certainly been a learning curve. I had no idea I was so anal about cleanliness until I was faced with an overflowing sink of plates and dried on food. Now, I don't mind clutter and messiness, but cannot abide dirt and unclean things. Getting people to not just leave their dirty plates and cooking implements has been a struggle for me and a couple of others in my flat.

Now I think I've settled in properly, I've got my first couple of assignments which actually count towards my mark for this year. Thankfully what I get this year doesn't count towards my degree, I just have to pass the year, but its still a little intimidating.

I'll keep you all updated how I'm doing in uni (If anyone's actually still reading by this point!) and I WILL update my stories soon, honestly!

Hugs

Bex

Veronica/Doctor Artwork

Here are some of the Doctor Who/Veronica Mars pieces of artwork that I tried out with photoshop. I was inspired by [info]sarah_jones and all of her amazing Doctor/Veronica artwork (I urge you to chack it out) She made some awesome artwork for my War Machine story, and I wanted to give it a go myself.

Some experiments on Photoshop

So I got a trial on Photoshop, and wanted to try some things out beyond the simple cut out and placements I've done before, and thought that I'd post them here.

These first ones are backgrounds and stuff like that I wanted to try

Blue Planet:                                                                                  Exploding Planet (Red):

I know that its been a very long while since I posted ANYTHING on livejournal. As the title of this post suggests, life has simply got in the way. For the past couple of months I've been anxiously awaiting my A Level results, because my university place relied on me getting my conditional offer. Two weeks ago I got my results and came out of college with 3A's in English Lit, Politics and Modern History, and an A* in my English Lit extended project. I can honestly say that I'm so relieved, and have been just trying to process the fact that I really am actually going to University (University of Southampton, to be specific) to study English Lit. I've been sorting out all of my accomodation, and shopping and all sorts like that, which has really been a challenge and a half, particularly as I've been working full time. Luckily I have a week off this week, so I'm hoping to get a lot done.

I'm still working on the sequel to Skies on Fire: Evil Walks, and am going to be posting the first chapter of my Veronica Mars/Doctor Who crossover very soon.

Hope that everyone is doing alright!

My Week 23/7/11

I'm obsessed with...

  • Jul. 17th, 2011 at 6:37 PM

Bead Bracelets. I've noticed that there is certainly a trend for charm bracelates with beads, rather than with hanging charms in the shops at the moment, whether they are the expensive ones, like Pandora, Lovelinks and Chamilia, or the cheaper versions from Argos. I've found the most amazing collections of beads on Amazon, sold by Loving the Bead, and Believe Beads at a fraction of the price of the others, but with the same quality of product (I've compared mine with friends who have the more expensive Pandora and Lovelinks bracelets, and I can see no difference between them at all) You can get so many beads from these suppliers, and they fit the majority of bead bracelets, and the majoiry of beads are between £1.25 and £1.75, compared to the £10, £20, £30 you pay for the same types for Pandora. At the moment I have the silver and lilac bonus bags, plus a few extra's like the owl and turtle below. I did a Polyvore of all of the beads that I want to have because they are just SO pretty!

A little obsessed...

With Polyvore at the moment! Below is an outfit which I've put together for my friends party which is in a couple of weeks. I have everything except for the shoes and dress, and am hopefully going to order them in the next couple of days. What do you think?
